Everyone thinks getting into FIFO is about tickets.
It’s not.
I see it all the time. People have the right tickets, a decent background, and still get zero callbacks. Then someone with less experience lands a job within weeks.
The difference is not luck. It’s how you apply.

After years in mining and reviewing resumes, I can tell you most people are doing it completely wrong.

Where Most People Go Wrong
FIFO applications are a numbers game.
On average, you might apply for 100 jobs and hear back from one. That’s normal. That’s how competitive it is, especially for entry-level roles.
Where people go wrong is thinking volume alone will carry them.
They jump on platforms like Seek and Indeed, fire off hundreds of applications, and don’t adjust anything when they get no response.
If your resume is weak or not targeted, applying more just means getting rejected more.
You need both.
Volume gets you in the game, but quality is what gets you the callback.

The 3 Channels That Actually Get People Hired
If you are only using Seek or Indeed, you are missing alot of other opportunities.
These are the three channels that consistently get people into FIFO roles.
1. Labour Hire Companies
This is where most entry-level roles come from. Shutdowns, trade assistants, utilities, offsiders. These companies are constantly hiring.
Companies such as:
You need to be in their system before roles even get advertised. The more email lists you are on the better chance you will have.
2. Company Career Pages
Big mining companies rarely rely on job boards alone. They hire directly through their own websites.
If you are not applying there, you are missing high-quality roles. Here are some Major Mining companies and the companies that service the camps and mine sites at bottom (Perfect for entry level utility jobs)
Min Res (Min Res runs the mine and they service their own camps)
Service Companies:
Spotless (Part of Downers)
3. LinkedIn and Direct Contact
This is where most people are too lazy to go.
Finding recruiters, connecting, and sending a short message puts you ahead of 90 percent of applicants. Go to the links and register with these companies and look at the available jobs sections.

The FIFO Application Stack (What You Actually Need Ready)
Before you apply for anything, you should have everything ready to go.
If you don’t, you slow the process down and miss opportunities.
Your basic stack should include:
- A tailored, clean resume
- Relevant tickets (not everything under the sun)
- National Police Clearance
- Proof of right to work
- Clear availability

If a recruiter calls, you want to be able to say yes immediately, not “give me a week.”
The Most Underrated Step: Following Up
This is where most people fail.
They apply and then sit back and wait.
The people who get hired don’t do that.
They apply, then follow up.
A quick phone call or email about a week after applying shows initiative and puts your name back in front of the recruiter.
You don’t need to overcomplicate it. Keep it simple, be polite, and be direct.
This alone can double your chances.
What Recruiters Actually Look For
It’s not just tickets and experience.
From a hiring perspective, these are the things that stand out immediately:
- Safety mindset
- Reliability
- Willingness to learn
- Clear communication
- Relevant, transferable experience

The Reality Most People Don’t Want to Hear
Your first FIFO job is the hardest to get.
That is normal.
Once you are in, everything gets easier. You get experience, contacts, and more opportunities.

Final Thoughts
If you are not getting callbacks, it is not because FIFO is impossible to get into.
It is because your approach needs work.
Fix how you apply, and your results will change.
