The Real FIFO Entry Pathway: How to Land Your First Mining Job

Everyone talks about FIFO money.

Very few people explain how to actually get there.

After 14 years in mining and reviewing resumes for site roles, I can tell you this:

Most people fail before they even understand how the system works.

This is the real pathway.

No fluff. Just what actually gets people hired.

Step 1: Understand What “Entry Level” Really Means

Entry level in mining does not mean unskilled.

It means:

• Trade Assistant
• Drill Offsider
• Utility
• Nipper
• Process Operator Trainee

These roles still require:
• White Card
• Police Check
• Working at Heights
• Confined Spaces
• Full driver licence
• Clean medical

If you don’t have the basics, you’re not entry level. You’re unprepared.

Step 2: Get the Right Tickets (Not Every Ticket)

Big mistake people make?

They collect random tickets.

Stop doing that.

If you want:

Trade Assistant → White Card, WAH, Confined Space, EWP
Drill Offsider → HR licence helps massively
Utility → Hospitality background matters
Process Operator → Forklift + mechanical aptitude helps

Target tickets that align with the role.

Not random weekend courses.

Step 3: Fix Your Resume for Mining

Mining resumes are not corporate resumes.

We care about:

• Site exposure
• Safety culture
• Physical capacity
• Shift work history
• Equipment operated
• Tickets listed clearly

Your resume must scream:
“I can handle site life and won’t be a liability.”

If it reads generic, it gets skipped.

Step 4: Apply the Right Way

Most people:

Upload resume to Seek.
Wait.
Complain.

Real strategy:

• Apply directly on mining contractor websites
• Labour hire companies
• Shutdown companies
• Follow up professionally
• Be available immediately

Mining hiring moves fast.

If you’re not ready when they call, you lose the job.

Step 5: Be Medically and Logistically Ready

When the call comes, they will ask for:

• Medical
• Drug and alcohol screen
• Police clearance
• Inductions
• Availability

If you say “I need two weeks”, they move to the next candidate.

Prepared people get hired.

Step 6: Understand the Real Competition

You are not competing against unemployed people.

You’re competing against:

• Ex-trades
• Defence background
• Labourers with shutdown history
• People already on other sites

So your edge needs to be:

• Clean, sharp resume
• Tickets aligned to role
• Fast response
• Professional communication

That’s it.

No secret handshake.

The Truth Most People Don’t Like

Mining does not hire potential.

It hires low risk.

Your job is to present yourself as the safest, easiest decision.

That’s how you break in.

Want to Know Where You Actually Stand?

If you’re applying and getting no responses, your resume is likely the bottleneck.
